How to use olive oil for hair growth

You ask us for a powerhouse when it comes to hair care, and we say olive oil. Keeping a bottle of olive oil handy not just in your kitchen, but your bathroom can help your tresses look thicker, stronger, longer and shinier. Yes, the rich, moisturizing oil can be used as a conditioner, a hot oil treatment, or as a finishing product.

As one ages, the structure of the hair undergoes a slow change, thereby making it weaker and resulting in hair loss and greying.  Hair loss can be caused by a lot of reasons- genetic or hereditary reasons, but often it can be caused by pollution, misuse of hair care products, frequent colouring, poor diet, and certain medications or over processing of the hair. These causes of hair loss can sometimes be reversed. Resorting to the use olive oil for hair growth is perhaps the best option.

Olive Oil for Hair Growth

Benefits of olive oil for hair: Removes dandruff

Dandruff comes from a scalp which is dry, and flaky. Lemon helps loosen the dandruff while olive oil moisturizes the new, exfoliated layer of skin. To get rid of that scurf, mix equal amounts of olive oil, lemon juice and water. Massage into damp scalp, leave on for 20 minutes, rinse and shampoo. This dandruff-fighting treatment should be used anytime in alternative weeks. Too much acidity from lemon could cause your hair to grey prematurely.

Benefits of olive oil for hair: Treats split ends

Winters make your hair prone to breakage, splitting, and frizzy flyaways giving your sleek haircut a messy and unkempt look. This is a time when you can use olive oil for hair that is smooth, has weight and moisture and is problem-free. Just smooth a little olive oil on your fingers and run them through your hair after you've styled it to give your ends and flyaways the kiss off.

Olive oil for hair strength and shine

You are in love with your regular conditioner which means you are in love with all the chemicals in it too. Olive oil could easily substitute it for bringing moisture back to your hair and make it look shiny. It is free of chemicals, rich in vitamin A, E, and antioxidants. It works by protecting the keratin in hair and sealing the moisture in. It is also believed to remove sebum buildup which blocks the new follicles and hinders hair growth.

How to Use Olive Oil for Hair Growth

Manage your hair better with olive oil

If your hair looks lifeless, doesn’t hold a curl, and is hard to style, it probably is undernourished. Find resort in a hot oil treatment which features olive oil for hair that is easy to manage and style. Coating you hair in half a cup of olive oil, leaving it for 30 minutes, and then shampooing it off can return the much needed moisture to your hair.

Use olive oil for extra smooth hair

All those brittle ends and frizzy curls make your hair feel like steel wool. Don’t worry, olive oil can help soften your hair, making it more malleable. A natural, deep conditioning treatment of olive oil each week can replace the extra silicone ingredients used in conditioners that give your hair a false feeling of softness of for a few hours.

How to use olive oil for hair growth

A hormone called DTH (dihydrotestosterone) is the culprit in many cases of hair loss, as it causes the hair follicle shaft to narrow. Olive oil actually stops this from happening, which means you can hold onto your hair for longer.

Benefits of olive oil for hair growth also go a long way in keeping promoting good health for your scalp, fighting fungi and bacteria, and improving the blood circulation. When your blood circulation becomes better, your hair follicles get stimulated, producing hair strands that are thicker and healthier.

It is actually amazing to see how olive oil and hair growth have become synonymous with it working alone excellently to prevent or slow hair loss.

Experts have proven that regular use of the olive oil helps to restore the shine in your hair. To ensure visible results, learning the right application method is equally imperative.

How to apply olive oil to promote hair growth

To use olive oil for hair growth, take 20 to 30 ml in a bowl and add approximately 10 ml of coconut oil to it.

  • Warm this mixture in a microwave, while ensuring not to overheat it. The oil should be warm enough to touch without scalding the fingers.
  • Part your hair in sections and apply the warm oil gently with your fingertips to the scalp. Continue this procedure, moving from section to section till the whole scalp has been covered.
  • Take some more oil on your palm and gently apply the oil from root to tips while holding each section individually.  This will condition the entire strand of hair and prevent breakage and split ends.
  • Soak a towel in hot water and squeeze out the extra water.  The temperature of the towel should not be uncomfortably hot.
  • Wrap this towel around your hair and leave it on for around twenty minutes.  This will not only steam your scalp for better absorption of oil, but will also enhance the blood circulation in the entire scalp.
  • During summers, wearing a shower cap after oiling your hair and leaving it on for thirty minutes would provide sufficient warmth to the scalp.
  • Wash your hair with a gentle shampoo. You can also use a baby shampoo as it is considered to be very mild. Repeat this procedure once or twice a week over a couple of months to witness best results.

Some herbs and spices also enhance the effect of olive oil. A teaspoonful of fenugreek seeds when added to olive oil and heated gently makes a powerful concoction that prevents dandruff and promotes hair growth.

Please understand that even though olive oil can work wonders for your hair, you must complement the olive oil treatments for hair with other lifestyle changes for even better results. Enriching your diet with good foods, such as almonds, seafood and Greek yogurt, can help your hair become healthier.

7 epic makeup tips for people who wear glasses

So you're going to a casual meetup with your friends and you decide to up your look. You get your eyes kohled, your wing sharp and lashes long. And then, you put on your glasses and no one can see just how perfect your eye makeup is.

Sound familiar?

For the most part, I wear glasses. They're easy, safe, less demanding than contacts and the only thing I don't have commitment issues with. But I'm well known for my love for makeup and can't try out many fun looks because of my glasses.

There are many occasions where I can't really switch to contacts and get ready to go out. I have to make do with the glasses. So after years of experimenting I have a few ideas about rocking makeup with glasses.

Here are 7 tips -- tried and tested by me!

1) Lighten your waterline

We desis love kohl on our waterline. It's almost soothing to have your eye shaped by a black outline. But when you wear glasses, this makes your eyes look smaller.

Go for a lighter shade on the waterline to make your eyes. White and peach are the common choice for brightening up the eyes but I feel more comfortable with a brown that is soft but still sticks to a sultry finish.

2) Double the liner

While it's best to stick to a nude look when in glasses (upper lid) it's best to thicken up your eyeliner to frame the eye better.

Also, try to wing out your liner in a way so the the extended line goes up to the corner of your frame.

3) Up the lower lash game

No matter how wide your glasses are, chances are the frames will make it difficult to show off your eye makeup, which is why try to stick to the lower lash line. While I still don't suggest black, dark shades can work, I love the smokey lower lash. Also, its the perfect place to have a pop of colour! So you can really experiment with your lower lash, it's your best feature in glasses.

Pro tip: If you have coloured frames, go for either a shade lighter than your frame for a soft look and a contrast for a statement.

4) Highlight the inner corner

Blame our love for highlighters but this is the best way to brighten up the eyes. A pop of highlighter in the inner corner of your eye really helps prevent the sunken look you get when you have glasses on. Plus, it makes you feel super bling... That's not a phrase but it makes sense here so spare me.

5) Volumising mascara

It's tempting to apply a mascara that gives you super long lashes but it's a nuisance glasses-wearers know too well. You have to keep readjusting your frames, probably clean them every few seconds and reminisce those moments when you could blink in peace.

We hate to say it but you'll have to ditch the length. Opt for a volumising mascara that thickens rather than lengthens. Go for a lash primer to add to the volume and don't be concerned about the length. This look is fine for glasses.

Tip: curl your lashes to prevent them from hitting the glass as well.

6) Frame your brows

There's a chance your glasses are hiding a part of your brows but the part that's visible can help pull your look together. Glasses end up drawing attention to your brows anyway so have them suit your frames because that is what'll shape your face for a finished look.

Make sure to highlight your brow bone to accentuate the shape.

7) A bold lip colour

It's a common makeup tip to focus on either the eyes or the lips. There is a reason light eye makeup is recommended in glasses. take the drama from your eyes to your lips.

This is your opportunity to have a fun bold lipstick, be the star of your look. Even colours that seem to bright or intimidating are comparatively toned down due to frames and this is a great way to look fierce in glasses. I'm known for my dark berry lip collection. Try out a bright red or a hot pink! The possibilities are endless!

The 10 Commandments of Applying Makeup Like a Pro

Sweeping on mascara might seem intuitive, but there's actually a lash-maximizing technique that when employed correctly can take your eyes from whatever to woah. Ditto brow pencil and even lipstick. Here, Kimberly Soane, the director of artistry at Bobbi Brown, offers up 10 easy tips for every product in your kit.

When applying blush, smile, then dust the apples of your cheeks, then sweep pigment towards the tops of ears, then down toward the jawline.

Trace brow pencil or powder along the tops of brows for an instant facelift.

For even lipstick application, start at the cupid's bow and extend out to the corners of the mouth before blotting.

Prep lids for any eye look with a matte base shadow that matches the lightest part of your face. Dust the pigment all over lids and up to the brow bone.

Instead of looking straight ahead at the mirror, get as close to it as possible, tilt your head up, and bring your chin toward the mirror. Look down as you apply, starting at the inner corner and working your way out

Sweep the wand through the roots of your lashes and zigzag as you work your way up.

Skincare Basics: Why You Should Exfoliate

Cleansing and moisturising on a day to day basis is great for your skin, but you should also be doing a few things weekly to keep your skin in tip top shape for example: exfoliating.

Best Exfoliating Products

Exfoliating is one of the best things you can do for your skin and it’s super simple. There are hundreds of different exfoliating products out there, but generally speaking the most gentlest and effective forms are chemical exfoliants which are enriched with AHA’s and BHA’s (Alpha Hydroxy Acids and Beta Hydroxy Acids) they sound scary, but they’re not and the right ones can be incredibly gentle on the skin.

Granular exfoliants can sometimes be harsh and cause broken capillaries whilst others can contain micro-beads which can be harmful to the environment so chemical based is your best bet.

Exfoliating has heaps of benefits and is great for:

  • Removing dead skin cells
  • Deep cleansing dirts and oils from the skin making products work more effectively
  • Helping to remove product build up
  • Renewing the skin and helping with anti-aging

Generally for the best results you should be exfoliating twice a week, but no more than three times, if you have sensitive skin or are time short you can even get away with once a week.  Exfoliating should be done in the evenings after cleansing the skin, but before using a serum and moisturising (exfoliants can sometimes increase the skins sensitivity to the sun so it’s best to do it in the evenings and ensure that you wear sunscreen on a daily basis)

How To Create Full, Fluffy, Thick Textured Brows

Fluffy, textured brows are all the rage nowadays and are a major beauty trend. I’ve personally always loved the look of brows that look natural and full, with the hairs moving all over the place and each one looking perfectly soft and defined. Fluffy, textured brows can take some work, and so can filling them in bit by bit, but there is an easy way. All you need is a tinted

It’s an easy technique that anyone can master, but you’re going to want to make sure your face is free of any makeup as it can get a little messy! Keep some makeup remover handy to clean up afterwards and if you like you can go in with a little concealer to really polish the brows off. Makeup wise I like to keep the rest of the face pretty neutral with just a little mascara, a hint of concealer and a bright coral lip.  Keep reading to see the picture tutorial!

          Fluffy Textured Eye Brows

Step 1. Start with clean, dry brows and brush them up using a clean, dry spoolie. It is also a good idea to start with clean skin and no makeup.

Step 2. Take your brow gel and brush the wand through the brows, pushing up the hairs as you go along.

Step 3. Start laying on the product quite thick, and make sure that you also define the tail/end of the brow.

Step 4. Allow the brow gel to dry, the brows should be dry to touch and you shouldn’t receive any residue on your fingertips.

Step 5. Soften the product and remove any cakiness by wiggling through the brows using the same spoolie from the beginning, don’t be afraid to get a little aggressive.

Step 6. As you can see the brows now have more texture and fullness, creating a similar effect that a brow powder would.

Step 7. Now it’s time for another coat! Go back in with the brow gel and start applying it through the hairs.

Step 8. Using the tip of the applicator really lay the product on to create thickness, you should be able to see the gel more than you can see the hair.

Step 9. Again, once the brow gel has dried completely, It’s time to brush it out! Go back in with your spoolie and brush through the brows to diffuse the product.

Step 10. Clean up the edges of the brows and any fallout with some makeup remover

Step 11. If you desire, you can fill in the tail of your brows with a pencil or any areas that are overly sparse (optional!)

Step 12. Although the brows will already have a decent amount of hold you may like to set them into place with a clear brow gel.

Things to Know Before You Colour Your Hair Again

You are basically altering the chemical composition of your hair strands to replace it with the hair colour pigments in order to produce your desired colour. When you colour your hair, you are therefore gradually weakening your strands. Make sure that you do not let this happen by informing yourself about what colouring your hair entails.

colour your hair

You might have undergone appointment to colour your hair several times in the past. However, it is important to bring to light some of the core issues associated with hair colour treatment so you can get a better understanding of how to protect and care for your hair strands.

Will This Colour Suit Me?

To be honest with yourself, have you ever asked yourself this question before your hair colour appointment? When you see a gorgeous hair colour on Instagram or Pinterest, you picture yourself with that hair colour and assume it would look just as good. However, several factors would go into choosing the right hair colour. Just because it looks good on someone it does not mean that it will look as good on you. You can check this guide on how to find a hair colour that would suit you. If you are confused about what hair colour family would look best on your skin tone, you can always your hairstylist to pick the right shades (within that colour family) that would complement your skin tone.

How Do You Maintain This Hair Colour?

This is another pressing concern that you need to address before you get a new hair colour. It might be easy to look at and admire at a beautiful hair colour, but enjoying that vibrant colour takes a lot of work, and products! The first step to caring for your hair colour and keeping it vibrant is finding the right product that would enrich that colour.

To give you an idea, the following hair colours require the most upkeep and maintenance: red shades, silvers, grays, and ashy tones, or any dramatic shade. These colours tend to oxidize over time so they require other products to maintain the colour vitality for longer. You need to be ready to visit the salon regularly or spend more on hair colour maintenance products. If you want a low maintenance colour, choose ones that are closer to your natural hue such as ombre or balayage.

How Long Will It Last?

Although you can use colour care products to maintain and extend the life of your hair colour, there is a natural life span to it. Hair colour maintenance can only do so much but there is a limit to the colour itself. There are two things that can impact how long the colour will last: 1) your hair type and its ability to hold that colour and 2) your hair texture.

Will It Irritate Your Scalp?

This is an important point to discuss with your hairstylist prior to getting your hair colour appointment. If you have existing allergies or sensitivity to certain hair products, you need to let your hairstylist know! That way, they can use gentler formulas to prevent irritation without compromising on the quality and shelf life of the hair colour products used.

Are you headed for your next hair colour appointment? Don’t forget the tips above so you can colour your hair with confidence!

Causes of Oily Hair and How to Stop Them

Did you know that the simplest things you do can have an impact on the condition of your hair? Such is the case when dealing with oily hair. If you are looking for ways to address this common hair issue, you need to get to the roots and causes of oily hair so you can fix them.

                 causes of oily hair

Constant Fiddling With Your Hair

Do you like to touch your hair with your hands so much? You need to break that habit. Your hands produce oil and touching your hair using your hands can facilitate in that transfer of oil. Aside from oil, you could also transfer dirt from your hands to your hair. You need to minimise this habit in order to inhibit one of the causes of oily hair.

Product Buildup

This is not just about products that are known to weigh down your hair. Any styling product you use can leave behind residues that weigh down your hair and make it look oily. There are two things you can do about it: 1) you can reduce your usage of styling products or 2) you can lather your hair with scalp to ensure that any residue is removed from your scalp.

Not Cleaning Your Hairbrush

causes of oily hair

This is something that you are probably guilty of. But did you know that dirty hair brushes are one of the leading causes of oily hair? Hence, it is a good practice to wash your brush regularly. This will get rid of any dead skin cells, oil, and other residues that might cling onto the bristles and could get transferred to your hair.

Incorrect Use of Products

Matching the right product to your hair is important beyond seeing the effects that it promises to bring to your hair. When you use the wrong products for your hair type, it is one of the causes of oily hair. If you have no idea what product to use to avoid your hair being oily, you can consult your hairstylist. They can diagnose your scalp condition and your hair type and make recommendations as to the best products to care for your hair without leaving it oily.

Which of these causes of oily hair can you attribute to your hair problem?

Why won't my hair grow past a certain point?

Have you ever gotten your hair dyed, only for your roots to start showing a few weeks later, yet your hair doesn't seem look any longer? What about going without a haircut for months, but your hair is still stuck at shoulder length? We understand how frustrating it can be if you're trying to grow your hair, but it just won't grow!

Why doesn't my hair grow past a certain point, you may be asking? We're here to tell you why and what you can do to stimulate hair growth for Rapunzel worthy hair.

Breakage

Here's some math for you: hair grows at an average rate of half an inch every month. That means, the average person's hair grows about 6 inches every year. To put that in perspective, that's less than half the length of our standard

If your hair is not receiving enough nutrients and is breaking off at the same rate, guess what? Your hair will stay the same length all year until you change your habits!

Split Ends

We've all had to deal with split ends, which are literally ends of hair that have split in two, sometimes even three (making them look like little's trees with branches!), due to the hair not receiving enough nutrients to live a long and healthy life. As a result, the split in the hair goes up higher and higher, resulting in the ends just breaking off. So, although your hair may be growing from the root - simultaneously, it is also breaking off from the bottom, making it seem like your hair is just STUCK at a certain length. How annoying.

Once split ends occur, it is not possible to undo them. The only thing you can do is cut those suckers off and prevent them in the future. Leaving split ends in your hair will just cause them to split further, leading to more hair breakage, and a vicious cycle of no hair growth.

                     How to promote hair growth

To prevent split ends and hair breakage, avoid bleaching your hair or over-processing it, as it can lead to super dry hair. Avoid towel-drying your hair harshly and let your hair air-dry instead. Brush your hair gently from bottom to top when detangling, and use proper fabric or silk covered hair elastics. Here are some more tips and tricks to preventing split ends. Trust us - your hair will thank you!

Genetics

You may not like hearing this, but sometimes hair growth and health is just dependant on genetics. Everyone has a cycle of hair growth specific to them - once a certain amount of time has passed, the hair will no longer grow and will either break off, shed, or be cut off eventually. Each hair strand has its own growth cycle, which is why we typically have different lengths of hair strands throughout our head. This cycle can be anywhere from 2 to 6 years, and no matter how well you treat your hair, cannot be extended simply due to your DNA. Nifty!

Age

Just like your genetics, your age may also be the reason why your hair just won't grow. A lifetime of heat styling, processing, bleaching, dyeing, and a less than ideal diet may all contribute to your hair weakening as you get older. It's just a part of life. So, the cycle of growth we mentioned earlier shortens, and what used to be a 6 year cycle is now a 2 year cycle, making the hair thinner, as well as unable to grow past a certain point. In addition to this, as you get older, the scalp begins to produce less oil leading to coarser, dryer hair and hair that is more prone to split ends and breakage.

Diet

As the old sayings go, "You are what you eat" and "Beauty comes from within." Have you ever gone on a junk food binge only to get a pimple the next day right before a big date? How about that amazing glow your face takes on when you're well hydrated? Your hair is the same way! A healthy, vitamin-rich diet= nourishment for your scalp, which = strong, long, beautiful hair. Iron, Vitamin D, B-complex, and zinc is optimal for healthy hair. Iron can be found naturally in eggs, spinach, and chicken, while salmon, mushrooms, and good ol' sunshine are great, natural sources of Vitamin D. B-Complex includes biotin, niacin, and cobalamin, which all give the hair thickness and shine - avocados, legumes, eggs, and whole grains are a great source for these. Finally, load up on lamb, turkey, and pumpkin seeds for an extra dose of zinc. Check out Mimi's recipe for a DIY Biotin shake for healthier hair below.

Haircare Routine

You wash your hair with steaming hot water, quickly apply shampoo and conditioner, rinse it off, brush all the tangles out, and proceed to aggressively towel-dry your hair before blow drying and straightening it. Sound familiar? Yup, because we've all done this. Guess what? These are terrible habits that all contribute to your hair weakening, breaking, and thinning!

Brush your hair BEFORE washing it, to completely detangle it. Brushing tangles out when your hair is weak from washing just leads to more breakage and split ends.

Next, washing your hair with hot water dehydrates the hair, causing brittle strands that are prone to breakage and fall out. Instead, turn down the heat to medium, and give your hair a blast of cold water at the end of your shower to lock in moisture and maintain shine. We know, it's totally unpleasant but trust us, it's worth it.

Why won't my hair grow past a certain point?

When washing your hair, be sure to take the extra time to leave your conditioner in for a few minutes. Bonus points if you use an extra-nourishing hair mask for at least 5 or more minutes. Hair masks are THE way to restore nutrients, moisture, and shine to the hair instantly! Seriously, if you haven't been performing a deep conditioning treatment mask at least once a week on your hair, you need to start. We promise you'll see a major difference in the health of your hair. In fact, check our our 5 favourite DIY hair masks that you can make at home.

We're all guilty of wringing our hair into that ridiculous towel-turban before harshly drying it. While it's fun to walk around looking like Jafar from Aladdin, your hair is being taken through "a whole new world" of damage!

Instead, pat your hair dry and leave your hair to air dry. Then, brush your hair once it is half dried, apply your hair creme or hair oil, and before you even think of heat styling, be sure to protect your beautiful locks with a heat protectant spray.

If all else fails...

Consult your doctor. At the end of the day, your hair may be shedding excessively, leading to less hair growth due to a medical condition like alopecia or an unhealthy scalp. Seeking professional help is always advised to be sure that you've covered all your bases.

Or...

Invest in some clip-in hair extensions! The solutions above are all longer term solutions, and it could take a few months before you start to see some real results. So, for those of you who are impatient - hair extensions extensions are an amazing way to add length and volume to your hair instantly while you grow out your own healthy hair - after all, who doesn't want mermaid-long hair in under 5 minutes? ;)
