Mountain Pose Yoga Workout

The mountain pose is one of the foundational asanas in yoga. An asana is a Sanskrit term for posture.

You’ll see it as a warm-up pose and part of a Sun Salutation Series or Surya Namaskara in Sanskrit. It is a sequence of 12 poses or asanas that is traditionally done in the morning, facing the rising sun, explains author, Krishan Kumar Suman, in the 2006 book.

This pose is deceptively easy. You begin by standing tall with a straight spine.  Your big toes should touch. But if you find it difficult, you can keep your feet apart slightly.

Keep your arms at your side with your palms facing outward. Hold the pose for at least 30 seconds, working your way up to a full minute.

The mountain pose will improve your posture and balance while strengthening the muscles in your lower body.

Pro Tips: How to Wear Red Lipstick

Valentine’s Day is around the corner, and two colors are on our mind – pink and red. Pink is our favorite lipstick color when we want to create an effortless, natural makeup look. But, red is the shade we choose when we want to stand out and feel confident. You may think a red lip is only for movie stars and women who drink everything out of straws. But we’re here to show you how easy it is to create a red pout that works with your style. Keep reading for simple tips from our Global Makeup Educators on how to wear red lipstick.

Beginner’s Guide: How to Wear Red Lipstick

If you rarely wear red lipstick, here are a few pointers from Global Makeup Educators Edgar Dominguez and Hannah Hatcher. With these four steps, you’ll have a soft, kiss-friendly pout all night.

Exfoliate First – “Red lipstick looks best on smooth, hydrated, plumped lips,” says Edgar. He recommends exfoliating and hydrating your lips with our Sugar & Butter Lip Exfoliator & Plumper before you even pick out your lipstick shade.

Define Your Lips – Use a lip liner that is a similar color to your lipstick (try Crimson Lip Pencil). This will give your lips natural definition. Hannah Suggests lining and filling in your lips with the same shade to help create a kiss-proof finish.

Use a Lip Brush – For the most precise look, Edgar recommends using our Retractable Lip Brush to apply the lipstick. The brush will make it easier to color inside your lip pencil line.

Set It, and Go! – For a matte stay-put pucker, Hannah likes to finish her red lipped look with a little Amazing Matte Loose Finish Powder. You can use your finger to gently dab it on over your lipstick.

Choosing the Right Red Lip for You

Red lip products come in many different shades and formulations. From the classic red lipstick à la Marilyn Monroe to a more natural red lip tint, we have you covered. Here are our favorite red lip products to use for a natural, classic or long-lasting look.

how to wear red lipstick, red lip products

Natural Reds

  • “My favorite red shade that is youthful and flattering on all skin tones is Forever Red Just Kissed Lip and Cheek Stain,’ says Edgar. “It has the perfect balance of coral and red, leaving you with a smooth personalized signature red that stays.”
  • Want to add a little shimmer to your candy apple lip? Product Trainer Christine Orcutt Savolis suggests topping your favorite lip product with Crabapple or Red Current PureGloss Lip Gloss.

The Classic Red

  • If you are looking for the classic red lipstick, Hannah’s pick is Cindy PureMoist Lipstick.

Long-lasting Reds

  • To ensure your lip color lasts through your romantic dinner, Global Makeup Educator Shawn Towne recommends using Lip Fixation. He says, “apply the stain from Passion Lip Fixation to your lips, then top it with Forever Pink Just Kissed Lip and Cheek Stain. The color it creates is really rich and beautiful.”
  • Christine’s secret to a matte red is Hot PlayOn Lip Crayon. She also likes to layer it with Forever Red Just Kissed Lip and Cheek Stain for added staying power. “I always say when you want a red lip, you want it to last, ” she says. “Forever Red really stays and is easy to touch up later in the day.”

Pumpkin Spice Makeup Is Fall Personified

Each year, the long-awaited arrival of the pumpkin spice latte heralds the unofficial beginning of fall. (What, you thought that honor went to Labor Day?) But pumpkin spice mania doesn’t just stop at Starbucks. Everything seems to be pumpkin spice-ified this time of year, from a myriad of (sometimes questionable) food products to skin care products that harness the benefits of pumpkin to even pumpkin spice hair color. And, of course, we can’t forget about makeup.

Pumpkin spice is a flattering shade that works on a variety of skin tones and can be applied to cheeks, eyes and lips. Unlike bright orange, pumpkin spice has brown, cinnamon and sometimes copper undertones that make it far more wearable and perfect for fall.

Hair Routine for Long Hair: How to Wash, Dry and Style

Step 1: Brush Hair From The Bottom Up

Before washing your hair, make sure to brush it out to get rid of any tangles. Always brush your hair from the bottom up, little by little, to avoid any breakage or hair damage.

Step 2: Raw Coconut Oil

A hair beauty secret weapon: Raw Coconut Oil. This is the super power hair product! It prevents hair breakage, moisturizes the hair, boosts blood circulation, is very rich in nutrients, and also antibacterial. Spread it on your hair where it needs the most attention. Karin focuses on her ends as that’s her problematic area. She recommends doing it in the evening before washing your hair the next morning so it stays on for the whole night while you’re sleeping. However, if you don’t have time, you can also put it on right before you take a shower. If you can, the ideal time for it to stay in your hair before you wash it is 1 hour. Then, finish it off by putting your hair in a bun.

Step 3: Wash Your Hair The Right Way

How you wash your hair plays a very important step to maintaining healthy and beautiful long hair. Do you only wash your hair once in the shower? If you answered yes (probably just like the majority of us would), then you should know shampooing TWICE is the right way to do it. When you wash your hair twice, the first round gets rid of all the dirt and gunk in your hair, and the second round actually cleans it. Then, finish off by using a conditioner along the ends of your hair to restore moisture.

Karin recommends using hair products that include natural ingredients such as coconut and argan oil. These are the types of ingredients that you want to search for your hair products as it’s naturally healthy for your hair.

Step 4: Brush & Blow Dry

After Karin’s hair is freshly washed and conditioned, she brushes gently through it to remove any tangles. Next, she likes to apply mousse to the roots of her hair to add more volume to it. Make sure to scrunch in the product evenly into your hair. Karin’s hair is long but very fine so this is a very effective and essential step in adding more volume to her hair. Now, before blow drying, Karin applies a couple pumps of a nourishing serum for split ends. This serum has argan and jojoba oil in it and also doubles as a heat protectant. Finally, when drying her hair, Karin always does it upside down for added volume. Try this trick, it’s so simple and it really works!

Step 5: Straightening Her Without A Straightener

A super neat trick you can use to straighten your hair without a straightener is to blow-dry your hair straight with a brush. Get a large round brush that is ceramic. The heat will transfer to it and act as a straightener at the same time. Karin doesn’t section her hair when she blow-dries because for her it's just as effective and is super quick to just go free hand.

Step 6: BB Cream

The final step in Karin’s long hair care routine is adding a BB cream. She only uses a small amount and spreads it all over her ends. You only need a little bit of product, otherwise, it can make your hair look greasy so be careful!

Step 7: Styling Long Hair

Karin only styles her hair after she washes it, so only twice a week. When styling her hair, she likes to tease her roots by sections. She slightly teases her sectioned hair and adds a bit of hairspray to hold the tease. If you do it right and not too often, it won’t damage your hair. She likes to do this step as it adds more volume and prevents her hair from getting greasy too quickly.

There you have it, seven simple steps to Karin’s Long Hair Care Routine. Long, beautiful hair definitely takes dedication, time, and care - but the results are so amazing! Let us know your long hair care routine in the comments below.

Trust me when I say I’ve got you covered in the realm of detox facials.  After a long day, I can confidently say that you’ll find me at home pouring myself a glass of red wine and enjoying a luxuriously long face mask. There’s something about detox masks that are cathartic, too: out with the bad stuff, in with the good stuff (like yoga, but way easier).  Interested?  Read on, darlin’.

e Everyday

The Yes To line always does me well.  This mask is a staple at a super-friendly price point (like $16 friendly), making it tempting to keep an extra one in the shower or even leave one at your S.O.’s house. Tomato is a natural revitalizer and astringent (which means it kills acne-causing bacteria) to remind your pores who’s boss. The mask is nice and fluffy too, and I like to apply with a heavy hand on my neck and arms. The best part is you can be on your way to glorious skin in less than ten minutes. Finally, to answer the most common question about this mask: It doesn’t smell like tomatoes — just your standard lightly-perfumed facial here!  I’m into this mask whenever I need an exfoliator and quick fix for my pores.

This is a futuristic mask if there ever was one. It’s infused with iron, which is a natural purifier — even the name “Magnetight” sounds like it should be a superpower in Tron. Liberally apply this magnetic formula on your face (Tron voice optional). After 30 minutes, remove with the provided magnet by slowly gliding it over skin — not touching it, but hovering over it. This seems gimmicky, but if there’s anything to shrink pores in super-stubborn places (um, hello area-around-the-nostrils), I’m game! They recommend covering the magnet with tissue to remove the mask for easy clean-up.  This mask is slightly greasy after removing the magnetic particles so make sure you give your face a good wash when you’re through.  Iron particles will help refine and cleanse your complexion, and hey, no fine lines here!

Sheet Mask

Sheet masks are usually known for their ultra moisture-locking qualities, but this one from Boscia manages to hydrate and suck out the pore-clogging gunk without overdrying. Talk about overacheiving. Packed with charcoal and tree tea (natural detoxers), this is a two-piece mask, so it fits snug-ly (as opposed to you trying to force-fit a too-small mask around your eyes, nose and mouth… you know what I’m talking about). Once it’s on, It absorbs sebum and oil, leaving skin squeaky clean — but not dry and flaky.  I’ll always recommend my age-old trick and tell ya’ll to stash sheet masks in the fridge for optimal cooling feels. After this mask, your pores will look smaller and less congested.  It’s like the Zyrtec for skincare, you know?

The Secret Weapon

SUPERMUD came at a time my skin really needed saving (I had to lay off my acne meds for a month since I got my eyebrows microbladed).  Fleeky brows aside, blemishes started to peek through my skin and I was looking for something a little more potent that could cure my breakouts.  Upon first touch, you really feel tingle and work its magic (I wanted potent, right?).  I can confidently say that my skin has never felt this incredible after just 30 minutes of anything.  Apparently, 3,000+ Sephora reviews feel the same.

The Spot Treatment

Okay so this isn’t a mask, but I’d never met a spot treatment like this one that demolishes pimples before they’re a thing.  Oddly, you don’t shake the bottle to this guy; keep the calamine settled at the bottom and use a Q-tip to dip into the jar and dab generously.  PMS pimples and stress breakouts?  Bring it.

Green smoothies and sauna sweat sessions, make way.  There’s a new way to detox.

9 Stunning Makeup Ideas You Can Try With Your Red Dress

Which dress is your pick to make a bold statement at a party? With a reverberating roar, most women would pick a red dress as it seems to bring out an alluring yet bold look in all women. But accessorizing this gorgeous dress can be tricky. One wrong move and the whole look goes from sexy to circus-y. However, there is not one single look that you must adopt to pull off a red dress with pizzazz. Here are some ideas that you can try with your red dress.

Makeup For Red Dress

1. Nude Glow On Red

As the red dress is a bright and flashy part of your look, you need to pick one focal point from the rest of your look. If you highlight every single feature, you will lose elegance and look gaudy. One look that many celebrities have adopted on red carpets along with their red dresses is the nude glow. You do not put any embellishments on your face, but your entire skin serves as a focal point by exuding a sort of nude, bronzed glow. For this look, apply a tinted moisturizer instead of foundation. Foundation robs your skin of a fresh and natural look. Apply mineral glow powder on your face. For glowing cheeks, apply powder blush shimmer followed by bronzing powder on the apples instead of under the cheekbones. Natural, matte eyeshadow, kohl pencil and black mascara are all you need for your eyes. Use a sheer lip gloss or nude lipstick to complete the look.

2. Red On Red For Night And Day

Wearing red lipstick with the red dress is a classic combination, but you have to be confident to pull it off. If you are preparing for a nighttime party, you can go along with this bold look. Start with a foundation base and use a very light blush on the apples of your cheeks. You can do your eyes with bold eyeliner. Wing tipped eyeliner, and fluffy, fake eyelashes work well with this look. But do not put on dark eyeshadow. Skip shadow altogether, or if you want, you can try a natural, shimmer shadow. Now for your lipstick, wear the same red as your dress or at least of the same family and warmth. Any other red would clash and ruin your look. Top it with a gloss.

For daytime, you can tone down the look by replacing the gel liner with a soft brown pencil liner. Ditch the shimmer eye shadow and apply rosy blush powder. The lipstick should be red and similar to the dress.

3. Old School Glam Look

The old school Hollywood glamour can be captured with a red dress and this makeup. To start with, apply concealer and foundation evenly on your face and blend well. Seal it with a translucent powder. Now for the eyes, using a cream eyeshadow of a natural tone, rub over your eyelids. Next, use gel eyeliner to create a defined line that starts out thin on the inner corner of your eye and ends thick and wing-tipped on the outer edge. Winging eyeliner is an art that cannot be mastered in a day. Practice a few times beforehand to perfect your technique. Finally, use mascara to add volume to your eyelashes. For your lips, this look requires red. You can wear bold red lipsticks. Or if you are unsure, you can use sheer red lip gloss or lip tint.

4. Smokey Eyes

Although many are afraid of creating theatrical eyes because they may clash with a red dress, if you are careful, smokey eyes go really well with the drama of red dress. For nighttime events, especially, the pairing of smokey eyes and red dress is very inviting. However, you must remember that your eyes are the focal point now, so your face and lips must take a backseat. So apply a very thin coat of BB cream (a tinted moisturizer would do). A peach, pink shimmer on the apples of your cheeks would add to the nude face. Bronzer is not necessary. But if the foundation makes your face seem pale, add a dusting of bronze powder for a healthy color. For the eyes, start with concealer on the lids to help the eyeshadow stick to it. With pencil liner, trace thick lines around your eyes. Use mascara to add volume to your lashes. Now trace the pencil lines with gel eyeliner for defined lines. Finally, brush metallic eye shadow on your lids. Instead of cream-based shadow, opt for two coats of powder shadow. For your lips, a nude shade of lipstick or lip gloss should suffice.

5. Fun And Flirty

You don’t always have to look drop-dead gorgeous in a red dress. It can be donned in a casual and fun look. For this look, start with a tinted moisturizer. On your eyes, apply eyeshadow of a neutral color. Use a pencil liner to draw thin line above your eyes and blend with the shadow using your finger. Your eye makeup needs to be minimal, but you must have fake eyelashes for this look. The simpering, doe-eyes look is captured by voluminous eyelashes. Curl your fake lashes and use mascara to fluff them up and untangle the clumps. Do your cheeks with a little bit of color on the cheekbones, but do not highlight. A tinted lip gloss is enough for your lips. You can also apply sheer, pink lipstick or shimmer.

6. Lips And Nails

Although for the glamorous, classic look, you can opt for a red lipstick, it is generally best to wear lighter shades that are closer to your natural one. A tinted lip gloss is the best option to avoid color clashing. For your nails, don’t try to match colors with your dress. Just a French manicure would do fine. If you wear nail polish, opt for nude colors.

7. Hair

For your hair, keep it simple. Do not go for tight curls or an elaborate hairdo. Slightly curled tresses that fall on your shoulders perfectly frame your face without taking the focus away from your makeup.

8. Skin

A red gown can easily emphasise the ruddiness and other imperfections of your skin, so do not hesitate to spend on a good base such as a branded colour correcting foundation to mask blemishes. On the other hand, if you have clear skin, you do not have much to worry about. A tinted moisturizer is all you need.

9. Highlight Eyes Or Lips, But Never Both

A standing rule to looking good in a colour like red is to steer clear from heavy makeup. You will look overdone and cheap if you get generous with bold colours. On the other hand, no makeup at all too can leave you looking dull and washed out. So, highlight either your eyes or lips, for that classic, elegant look!

With these simple red dress makeup tips, you are sure to be the stunner at your most awaited party! Whether you are the host or the guest, you are sure to leave people in awe!

8 Tricks to Instantly Plump Your Lips

Full, supple lips is one of the biggest beauty trends nowadays, but in fact, this look has been coveted since the days of Marilyn Monroe. A plump pout is not only thought to be seductive, but it’s also one of the simplest ways to give yourself a naturally healthy appearance. When the skin on your lips look hydrated and healthy, it’s almost a given that you are working to ensure the rest of your skin and body feels the same way. So, how do you make your lips look plump?

One of the simplest ways is to use our Just Kissed Lip Plumpers. They contain certain peptides, such as Palmitoyl Oligopeptide, which have been shown to plump lips by increasing hydration and stimulating collagen synthesis. The peptides take time to work, but have been proven to show results with regular use and application, so your lips will appear smooth and full, naturally.

How to Make Your Lips Look Plump with Makeup

If you’re looking for a more immediate way to make your lips look bigger, here are our best lip plumper makeup tips:

1) Exfoliate every day.

If your lips are dry, dehydrated and flaky they will not reflect light, making them appear dull. Exfoliate your lips every morning with a gentle lip scrub like the Sugar side of Sugar&Butter Lip Exfoliator/Plumper. It’s not too harsh, but provides enough friction to remove any flakes from your lips. Not to mention, it tastes delicious! Exfoliating also helps increase circulation in your lip area, adding a flush of color and making your lips look bigger naturally.

2) Create a nude base.

If you plan to give your lip line some help, start by making your entire lip area nude. Apply concealer to the outline of your lips and blend it in toward the center, this way you are hiding your true lip line. Then, apply a little bit of powder on top of the concealer to set it.  This trick creates a uniform canvas for your lip liner and helps to ensure your lip color will not move.

3) Stay close to your lip line.

Don’t veer too far from your natural lip line—Jane recommends lining just outside the vermilion border (the ridge of your lip line), but not onto the skin. To make your lips look plump, fill in the entire lip with the liner, as well.

4) Pass on dark lip liners.

To make your lips appear larger, line just slightly outside the lip line with a nude, pinky nude or neutral Lip Pencil. Dark lip pencils can create the illusion of smaller or slimmer lips and they can make your mouth appear flat, rather than full and voluminous. “Think about that favorite little black dress you have,” says Global Makeup Educator Hannah Hatcher. “Why do you love it so much? Because it is slimming! The same idea applies to your lip liner choices.”

5) Emphasize your bottom lip.

Add a hint of light to the center of the bottom lip to give your lips a pouty fullness. There are a lot of products you can use to get this look. Try adding a hint of lipstick in a lighter shade than your base color for an ombré effect. Dot a bit of lip gloss on your bottom lip to give it shine, or use our Quad Bronzers in Moonglow, Rose Dawn or Sunbeam and pat a small amount on the center of the bottom lip. Make sure to apply any powders after your lip color is on, but before you add any gloss.

6) Shine, shine, shine!

A little shimmer adds light reflection and fullness to your lips. So if want to boost your pout, grab a PureGloss Lip Gloss. You can wear it by itself or layer it on top of your favorite lip color for extra oomph.

7) Highlight your cupid’s bow and under the lower lip.

Use one of the lighter shades in our Quad Bronzers or even a White Eye Pencil to create the illusion of light on the high points of your mouth. Apply a small amount just above the cupid’s bow on the top lip, and a just below the lip line. Blend well with your fingertips so there are no obvious lines of demarcation.

8) Add a little shadow below your lip.

Some makeup artists use a water resistant light brown Eye Pencil to create a small shadow on your chin, underneath the center of your bottom lip, thus making the lips look plump. Be extremely careful doing this, too much and you will end up with a beard! Just a light flick of the wrist is enough to create this 3D effect.

Old Fashioned Beauty Tips & Secrets for Hair, Skin & Face

With dozens of new beauty trends and fads each year, it can get confusing when trying to decide what beauty tips will deliver real results, and which tips are full of fluff. A good way to weed through the thousands of beauty secrets and tips is to go back to the basics that have been passed down from generation to generation. After all, old beauty tips & secrets that stand the test of time are surefire ways to get beautiful skin, nails, teeth, hair and eyebrows. With this being the case, here is a look at some classic beauty tips and secrets that reign true today.

One trend that has popped up lately is using beer as a rinse when your hair is looking dull and lifeless. It has also become popular to use lemon juice to improve the appearance of your hair. However, before all of these tricks existed, women used vinegar to make their hair shimmer and shine. Apple cider vinegar is a classic repairing hair rinse because it will close the hair cuticle, and balance your hair’s pH levels.

Here is how you can use apple cider vinegar to remove build-up, and bring back the shine to your hair:

  • mix 0.5 cup vinegar and 0.5 cup water together, and rinse your hair with the mixture after shampooing.
  • Rinse the mixture from your hair with water, being sure to avoid contact with your eyes to keep them from becoming irritated.

You can use this once a week to achieve good results.

Moving along, it seems like a new hair tool is released every few months claiming to be the best hair curler or flat iron; however, they always seem to leave women disappointed and a few dollars poorer. So if you want a classic and effective hair style, hot rollers are the hair tool to use. The hot roller method has been used for decades, and you’ll get classic curls quickly without using a curling iron. Enjoy more beauty tips for hair.

If you were paying attention 30 years ago, you would have noticed the food-to-skincare treatment trend that brought yogurt from the spoon to your skin. Well, this is a solid facial treatment that is easily done at home, and will give you some deep cleaning and exfoliating action.

Here is how to boost your skin’s appearance by using food found in your local grocery store:

  • Combine in a bowl 1 Tbsp yogurt, 1 Tbsp flour, 1 tsp cucumber juice, 1 tsp honey, 1 tsp baking soda and 1 egg.
  • When you are done mixing the ingredients, apply this mask to your face.
  • Keep this mask on for 15 minutes, rinse with warm water, and continue your normal skincare routine afterward with a toner and moisturizer.

If you’re low on ingredients, you can use an egg for a face mask:

  • Begin by cracking the egg and separating the egg white from the yolk.
  • Then whisk the egg white until it is frothy with tiny bubbles.
  • Then on a clean face, apply the egg white and wait 10 minutes, or until your face feels tight.
  • Rinse the egg white mask off of your face and pat to dry with a towel.
  • Take the yolk and apply to your face; the yolk acts as a natural moisturizer.
  • Again you will wait 10 minutes, or until your face feels tight, and then rinse it off. Continue with your normal face routine with toner, anti-aging serum and moisturizer.

Tweezing can be painful, and waxing can cause your eyelid to sag as you age; so in order to get perfectly tweezed brows, you may want to try something that was originally made for canker sores. Gels used for the relief of canker sores will numb your eyebrows so that it is painless for tweezing. You should follow the estimated time of 5 to 10 minutes after applying the gel to your brow before plucking your eyebrows. It is important to keep the gel out of your eyes as it can cause irritation, so be cautious when applying canker sore gels.

It’s no secret by now that baking soda can brighten and enhance your smile if used in combination with normal everyday toothpaste. There are expensive products on the market these days that give you instantly whiter smiles in just hours, but they come at a hefty price.

To get a brighter smile without paying a lot of money or using up a lot of time, use baking soda, salt, and peroxide with your toothpaste 2 or 3 times each week.

Here is how to put the mixture together:

  • add equal amounts of toothpaste and baking soda, then a pinch of salt; use enough peroxide to create the toothpaste’s original consistency.

This is great for women and men who drink wine or coffee regularly. But it’s not to be used on dentures or veneers because they are made of non-porous polished porcelain, which can be dulled by baking soda.

Puffy Eyes

Women and men alike will notice puffy eye areas due to weakening tissues and muscles as they age.

To erase puffy eyes from your face, use cucumbers; place one slice of cucumber on each closed eye, and lye down for 5 minutes or longer.

Using cucumbers isn’t the only way to de-puff your eyes; getting enough sleep and drinking plenty of water also helps!

Hemorrhoid cream sounds like the last think you’d want to put onto your face, but it is actually great for reducing crow’s feet and other wrinkles on your face; it’s also used to moisturize your skin. Preparation H and other hemorrhoid creams are significantly less expensive than the anti-aging creams, serums, and lotions on the market with similar if not better results. Preparation H is also great for helping reduce the appearance of under-eye dark circles!

Sometimes older, old fashioned way is better, and in most cases, you’ll save time and money by not following all of the latest trends that come along… and do not forget to check our beauty tips, to enjoy more beauty tips and secrets for hair, skin but also how to create wonderful makeup and lose some weight!

Healthy Food Guide for Pregnant Women

If you are pregnant your eating plan needs to change because you have nutritional needs that you do not have when you are not expecting. Remember everything you eat, drink and are exposed to also affect your baby. Your unborn child gets all of its nutrients from the things you eat and if you do not have enough of a nutrient, your body may begin to supply it from its reserves. Enjoy reading our healthy food guide for pregnant women.

One example of this is calcium. If you do not consume enough calcium in your diet or through supplements, your body will supply it to your unborn child from the reserves in your body. This can make your bones and teeth weak as well as affect your nails and skin. Get the nutrients you and your unborn baby need through a diet plan that is formulated especially for pregnant women.

Important Nutrients for Pregnant Woman

Vitamins A and E, iron, potassium and folic acid are all essential for pregnant women. While your prenatal vitamins prescribed by your doctor give you an extra boost of essential vitamins and minerals, you can not rely on them to give you complete nutrition. Nothing replaces a healthy diet rich in fresh fruits and vegetables as well as lean protein sources and whole grains. Take your prenatal vitamins, but also eat a balanced healthy diet to give you and your baby the nutrition you both need to be healthy.

Two of the most important nutrients for pregnant women are folic acid and iron. Folic acidhas been proven to help prevent neural tube defects. These are defects in your baby’s spinal cord and brain. Folic acid also helps prevent cleft lip and congenital heart disease. Iron protects you from developing anemia, a lack of red blood cells.
Iron also helps increase the oxygen transference in your bloodstream and builds red blood cells for the increased amount of blood you need in your body. Your baby also needs to store red blood cells to be used in the first few months of life.

Do not take large amounts of vitamins and minerals thinking more is better. Too much Vitamin A can cause birth defects, and be wary of herbal supplements. Herbal supplements have not been studied for their effects on unborn babies so don’t take chances. Take your prenatal vitamins as prescribed by your doctor. If you find they upset your stomach, try taking them at night or with meals.

Dietary Recommendations

When you are pregnant you will give your baby a good start by eating a healthy and balanced diet. Some of the foods to include in your diet include the following which are high in the vitamins and minerals you and your baby need:

  1. Fortified cereals and fortified whole wheat bread and pasta
  2. Wheat germ
  3. Orange vegetables like carrots, sweet potatoes and pumpkin
  4. Dark green leafy vegetables such as spinach, kale, collards, beet greens and turnip greens
  5. Winter squash
  6. Tomatoes and tomato sauces
  7. Sweet red peppers

Foods to avoid include excess sugar, caffeinated coffee and tea, soda, diet soda, alcohol and foods high in fat and cholesterol. Drink plenty of water to keep your system clean and aid in digestion and bowel movements. If you experience indigestion, consult with your doctor about the use of antacids, or try a cup of peppermint tea to settle your stomach.

Portion Control

Your doctor will more than likely tell you not to gain much weight during your pregnancy. This can be hard because you may feel hungry most of the time. Snack on healthy foods like carrot sticks and some ranch dressing, celery and peanut butter, or an apple with cream cheese or peanut butter. Pay close attention to the serving sizes of your meals. One half cup is generally the serving size of starchy vegetables and high sugar fruits. Three ounces of meat is a usually a serving, but your doctor will give you guidance about your particular caloric allowance.

Although you want to eat healthy, don’t deprive yourself of a treat now and then. A piece of cake or pie is fine as long as you stop at one piece. Many times you can have up to 300 extra calories per day. This means you can have a treat once in a while so you don’t feel like you are missing out on your favorite treats.

Eat healthy, get plenty of rest and take your prenatal vitamins and you can give your baby a healthy start to life.
