Eyelash Curler: What It Is & How to Use It

“The eyes are the windows to the soul” wrote many scholars and poets from the days of Matthew to this day.

And we, the mortals, try to make this portal to our soul as attractive as possible. A well known way to make the eyes appear bigger and more pronounced is by manipulating the eyelashes.

The eyelashes provide an important biological function: they are sensitive to the touch and protect the eyes from airborne debris, in the same way that whiskers tell a cat that something is near by.

Our eyelashes develop in vitro during the 22nd to 26th weeks of gestation. In adults, the lashes take about 8 weeks to grow. The color of the lashes tend to be darker than the head hair.
Lashes appear in other mammals as well. The camel’s lashes are known to be especially long and thick to protect it’s eyes from sand storms. Horses, dogs, cats, cows and even ostriches have eyelashes as well.

Long eyelashes have been considered throughout the ages as a sign of femininity. Women try to enhance the appearance of the eyelashes through coloring them with mascara or wearing artificial eyelashes that are glued to the base of the eye lid where normal eyelashes usually grow. The latest fashion calls for eyelash extensions that are glued individually between your own eyelashes and last for a few weeks. Permanent tinting of the eyelash also exists.

In recent years the drug companies have turned their attention to the eyelashes as well. We started hearing a lot about Latisse, a medication approved by the FDA in 2009, for the purpose of enhancing the growth of eyelashes. Another medication, called Lumigan, is normally prescribed to treat glaucoma. One of the side effects of this medication, it was discovered, is to grow long and new eyelashes.

But if you don’t want to resort to medications that have some side effects (the Lumigan for example will darken your eye color turning hazel eyes to brown), there are other methods: eyeliner, eyeshadow, mascara and eyelash curlers.

Eyelash curlers are in existence since the beginning of the 1930s, invented by William McDonnell of Rochester, New York. They were made of metal and later had rubber pads. The best ones today are still made of very light metal with silicon pads. Some editions are made of 24k gold.

This crimping tool with a scissor-like handles is designed to make your eyes appear wider and brighter by curling the upper lashes, slanting them back towards the brow. This way, it is believed, they open the eyes and provide a frame.

How to Use Eyelash Curler?

For the process to be clean and fast, do it before applying mascara.

  1. Open the curlers and trap the upper lashes in between the pads as close as you can to the base of the lashes.
  2. Close the curler and hold for a few seconds. Release and move up the lashes until they are facing the direction you desire.
  3. To accelerate the process you can heat up the curlers with a hair dryer. Warm them up, do not make them too hot to touch.
  4. Apply a good coat of mascara.

Do not pull the lashes to the side with sudden movements or slide the curler instead of opening it up. With some practice this process lasts a mere few seconds.

You can always “touch up” the curve of the lashes after you’ve applied mascara, but remember to clean the silicone pads with eye makeup remover. You don’t want the old mascara crimp the lashes in the wrong direction. Manufacturers recommend to change the pads every two months or so.

Want A Flat Stomach In 7 Days? Just Drink This Twice A Day

You are on a fat loss mission. With intense workouts and a strict diet, you lose fat from most parts of your body except your tummy. Sounds familiar? Join the club. Most people wanting to lose weight face the same problem. Burning fat from any part of the body is much easier when compared to the belly region. No wonder it’s called ‘stubborn’ fat. But, don’t give up yet as we have found a possible solution to flatten your stomach quickly. Curious much? Read on to know more.

Before we tell you about the magical drink that can burn your belly fat, first let’s understand why exactly it is difficult to lose weight.

Why Is It Hard To Burn Belly Fat?

When you binge eat, the first area that shows signs of weight gain is definitely your stomach. Not just poor eating habits, having a desk job can also easily add a few inches around your waist. Inactivity leads to muscle loss, which lowers your body’s capacity to burn calories. This is why you will notice the fat getting accumulated around your abdominal region. You might even start eating less and exercising more but to no avail.

A bulging stomach is not only an ugly sight but also spells danger as it could be a sign of heart disease.

Here are the reasons your belly is refusing to budge.

  • Booze

Drinking alcohol could be adding more calories than you can imagine. It widens your waistline. Now you understand why your stomach is called ‘beer’ belly?

  • Age

A girl in her teens is more likely to lose weight quicker than a woman who has reached 30. The reason is simple. As you age, your metabolic rate goes down, and so does the body’s ability to burn fat. Hormonal imbalance and menopause translate to more fat around your tummy. So, if you are in a relaxed mode thinking you have a lifetime ahead of you to lose weight, this is a wake-up call.

  • Exercise

When you make a plan to workout, make sure you consult a fitness instructor. What worked for your friend need not necessarily work for you. Speak to a trainer who will recommend activities/exercises depending on your body type and its capacity. For example, a person with low hemoglobin cannot run as the heart takes double the effort to pump blood due to lack of iron in the body. So, it helps to know your body’s strength and weaknesses before starting any exercise. You don’t want to end up with another health issue, do you?

  • What’s on your plate?

When you talk of belly fat, it’s more often than not linked to inflammation. If you are having too much of outside food or what’s called junk food like chips, aerated drinks, processed foods, it can thwart your body’s ability to burn fat around your belly. Always stick to natural foods as they have anti-inflammatory properties.

  • Stress

One of the leading contributing factors to weight gain these days is the rising levels of stress. Hectic work schedules, increased domestic responsibilities, the environment at home and work – all these can lead to an increased level of stress. How many times haven’t you reached out for a bottle of beer or a pack of French fries to get over your pressures? The comfort that these foods give will increase your emotional eating indulgences. Besides, the stress hormone cortisol is linked to visceral fat. The bottom line is to stay calm. Meditate, take up a hobby or your favorite sport to bring down your stress levels.

  • Lack of sleep

The best way to lose weight is to get enough sleep. Lack of sleep leads to low energy levels that make you reach out for sugary stuff, which ultimately leads to weight gain.

  • Are you healthy?

When was the last time you did a complete body check up? Every person must get a full body examination done at least once a year. Your body’s requirement, ability, and condition change depending on what you eat and the environment. So, keep a check on the changes in your body. People with thyroid issues and Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) are more likely to face difficulty in losing weight as compared to their healthy counterparts.

Now that you know why you are not losing weight, let’s take a look at the magical cure to lose belly fat. This is a simple solution that will drive all your weight loss worries away. So, all set to know what it is? Here you go…

Caffeine-free teas for morning energy

Caffeine-free teas can be as tasty and effective as coffee, honest, our writer Giulia Mele (an Italian caffeine addict) discovered after testing out the 10 best caffeine-free teas for morning energy

The scent of coffee is a delightful ritual of my mornings that cheers me up even in those wintery blue London days, and by the way it’s THE thing that can wake me up.  I’m Italian you see and I drink single espresso without sugar, bring a mocha wherever I go, and I have never considered the idea of living without caffeine. What a test this was!

Why caffeine free?

  • Caffeine-free and herbal teas keep you hydrated, which helps your body and mind function on a higher level, boosting your performance and concentration at work

  • Decaffeinated tea allows to reduce some of the potential problems associated with caffeine, especially risks of cardiovascular disease, like stroke
  • Both decaffeinated and regular teas are rich in natural phytonutrients called flavonoids, powerful antioxidants with anti-inflammatory and immune system benefits
  • Consumption of this tea results in good digestion, keeping your stomach healthy and giving you softer skin
  • Tea and especially coffee contain high levels of caffeine that can contribute to some negative effects such as insomnia.
  • Modulating coffee intake helps minimise symptoms of having had too much such as jitters, irregular heartbeat, anxiety and adrenal fatigue
  • Herbal teas can be found in so many variations and flavors and most of them contain traces of nutrients that support overall health.

So it happened, I had two tough weeks, crossing my fingers every morning and wondering if the tea of the day would work, and I had lots of fun tasting such a huge variety to find the ones I loved.

At the end of the two weeks I made it, sans caffeine. Here they are the 10 best caffeine-free teas for morning energy, you you want to skip the caffeine (or have less)

Castor Oil for Hair Growth & Other Benefits

Castor oil is used for everything from making food to pain relief, and the amazing thing is that the benefits don’t stop here. Castor oil can also be used to remedy a variety of hair problems that may occur due to age or poor health such as hair loss. There are even a few myths regarding this oil in that it causes women to grow a beard when applied to their face. We’ll get to the bottom of this myth, and cover some other important things that you should know about castor in this article.

Castor Oil for Increasing Hair Growth

Castor oil is an inexpensive solution for eyebrows that refuse to grow, lashes that are sparse, or hairlines that seem to be moving back each year. Some people will notice an improvement within weeks, but it can take up to 2 months for others to see hair growth.

Castor oil is also good to use for eyebrows that are too light;
just apply the oil to your eyebrows with a disposable mascara wand each night before retiring to bed, and you’ll notice thicker and darker eyebrows in a few months. Another tip is to use an angled eyeliner makeup brush to apply the oil to your lash line for an improvement in both length and growth of lashes.

It’s unfortunate for those who were born with too few eyebrow hairs since the probability of growing hair that was never there before is low. But castor oil will still darken the hair, and encourage growth if you’ve over tweezed the area. It should also be mentioned that laser hair removal will be reversed if castor is applied to the area of the removal.

This oil is also used to promote hair re-growth after an injury that caused the hair to be removed like burns or deep cuts. If you’ve had surgery on an area that should normally be full of hair, then, once you’re able to do so, apply castor oil each night before bed to encourage speedy re-growth of your hair.

If you’ve noticed your strands being slightly thinner than they were before, it’s best to begin using castor oil to stop any more hair loss, and to encourage your hair follicles to regenerate more locks.

Other Castor Oil Benefits

To keep the gunk from building up and clogging your hair’s ability to grow, use castor oil on your scalp a few times a week and your problems will be solved! You’ll also have a healthier glow about your locks that makes styling more manageable. Castor oil makes a great scalp treatment, but adding coconut oil to the mix will greatly enhance your hair’s health as well. Both oils are known for their anti-bacterial and anti-fungal qualities, which keeps the scalp clean and hydrated. This inevitably gives your hair the chance to shine and grow – and with the coconut oil coating your strands – it reduces the amount of breakage you see due to everyday styling.

Men who notice their hair becoming thinner more quickly than they’d prefer can use castor oil to reduce hair loss, and encourage the strands they’ve lost to grow back. Use castor each night before bed by giving your scalp a good rubdown with the oil. It will cause some mess on your pillow case, so be sure to wear a shower cap or be okay with the oil stain on your pillow. Also be ready for more hair trims because the results can happen in as fast as a month when you’re applying the oil regularly.

7 Lipstick Hacks Every Woman Must Know

Lipstick is one of the most classic cosmetics and remains an essential part of many women’s makeup routine. There’s even a holiday to celebrate its greatness—National Lipstick Day is July 29! We often rely on lipstick to help us feel pulled together and confident. On the other hand, sometimes we simply wear it because we enjoy the shade, the moisturizing finish, or even its scent. If you’re a lipstick lover like we are, these lipstick hacks will make applying your favorite shade even better.

7 Life-changing Lipstick Hacks

For those who love it, lipstick is a way of life. So any trick that makes it easier to wear, maintain and enhance your lip color is essential.  Keep reading to learn everything from the right way to apply lip liner, how to fix broken lipstick, or simply how to change the finish of your favorite lipstick.

1) Exfoliate your lips.

No matter what color or finish of lipstick you are using, having smooth, hydrated lips is vital. When your lips are dry or flaky, the lip color doesn’t last as long or look as uniform. Use our Sugar & Butter Lip Exfoliator to slough off any dead skin, leaving your lips smooth, supple, and ready for color.

2) Fix mistakes with Absence.

Lipstick mistakes happen to everyone, but erasing stray marks of color is easier than you think! Many people recommend applying a little concealer around your lip line after applying lipstick, but we prefer to use Absence Oil Control Primer. If you apply a tiny amount to any stray marks using the Camouflage Brush, it acts as a magic eraser to helps get rid of mistakes and make your lip line more defined—no wiping necessary.

3) Make any lipstick matte.

Matte lips are on trend at the moment, but what can you do if your favorite shade isn’t in a matte finish? Find a matte blush that is a similar shade then, using your finger, gently pat the powder blush onto your lips to create a beautiful matte finish.

4) Lock your lip look in all day.

One of the challenging things about lipstick is how your favorite shade can slowly fade as you wear it.  To keep your lip look locked in place all day try the following steps.  Gently blot excess lipstick off on a tissue after you’ve applied it.  Using a clean tissue separate the two ply apart so that you have one thin layer of tissue in each hand.  Place one layer across your lips, then using translucent loose powder sprinkle a dusting of powder across your lips.  Finally add another layer of lipstick and you’re good to go!  The translucent powder absorbs excess oil on your lips throughout the day, helping the lipstick to adhere better and last longer.

5) Get a perfect line every time.

We all struggle to create the illusion of perfectly defined lips, but using this hack makes lining your lips easy. First, using your Lip Pencil draw a diagonal line from the highest point of your top lip, down the inside of your Cupid’s bow to the bottom of your upper lip. Then, repeat the process on the other side of you Cupid’s bow. Creating the X helps you create a perfectly lined Cupid’s bow every time.

6) Nudes not enough?

We all love our favorite nude lipsticks, but sometimes they just don’t look right. This might be because your natural lip color is showing through the lipstick. To fix this, pat a small amount of concealer or foundation over your lips before applying your lipstick. This hack will ensure that your lipstick is true to color.

7) Stop your lipstick from feathering.

If your lipstick sometimes strays outside of your lip line, try using a face primer,  Apply the primer on clean lips before you apply your lipstick.  Your lipstick won’t stray again.

Sit back and enjoy the video below, or keep scrolling down for a step-by-step tutorial on how to achieve each hairstyle.

#1: Half Updo Bun

  1. Part a section of hair towards the top of your head and gather it back and secure into a ponytail with a hair elastic. Optional: For additional volume in this Half Updo Bun, clip in two stacked 1-clip wefts in the area you will be gathering into a ponytail.
  2. Wrap the ponytail around in a bun, and while doing so loosely spin the hair to give the bun more texture.
  3. Secure bun with bobby pins.

#2: Reverse Dutch Side Braid

  1. Take a section of hair towards one side of your face and begin braiding this section into a reverse dutch braid. Optional: For additional volume in the braid, you can stack two 1-clip wefts in the same section of hair prior to braiding.
  2. Secure the braid at the end with a hair elastic. Pull on the braid to fan it out and voluminize the look.

#3: Dutch Side Braid Ponytail

  1. Using the same Reverse Side Dutch Braid, simply pull the rest of your hair and the braid to one side, and secure in a low ponytail.
  2. For a more tousled look, you can take out a few face framing hair pieces.

#4: Fishtail Pigtails

  1. Part your hair down the middle and section your hair off into two. Secure both sections of hair into low pigtails.
  2. Fishtail braid each section of hair and secure with an elastic.
  3. Fan out the braid to make it more full and voluminous.

#5: Three-Strand Braid Pigtails

  1. Part your hair down the middle and section your hair off into two. Secure both sections of hair into low pigtails.
  2. Create a regular three strand braid on each section of hair, and secure with an elastic.
  3. Fan out the braid to make the hairstyle more full and voluminous.

#6: Three-Strand Braid High Ponytail

  1. Pull your hair back into a high ponytail.
  2. Braid your hair in a simple three strand braid, and secure with a hair elastic.
  3. Fan out the braid to make the look more full and voluminous.
  4. Pull face framing pieces/baby hairs for a more natural look.

#7: Three-Strand Braid Bun

  1. Pull your hair back in a high ponytail.
  2. Braid your hair in a simple three strand braid.
  3. Instead of securing at the ends, wrap your hair around in a bun and secure with an elastic.
  4. To ensure the braid does not unravel, secure bobby pins in bun.
  5. Pull out face framing pieces/baby hairs for a more casual look.

#8: Twist-Through Ponytail Braid

  1. Secure your hair in a low side ponytail.
  2. Add in another hair elastic about a quarter of the way down from the first hair elastic.
  3. Create a hole through the section of hair in-between the two elastics,  and wrap the rest of your hair through that hole and downwards. Continue this step with another section of hair in the ponytail - you can leave it at two or continue all the way down.
  4. Secure with a hair elastic at the bottom.

Mountain Pose Yoga Workout

The mountain pose is one of the foundational asanas in yoga. An asana is a Sanskrit term for posture.

You’ll see it as a warm-up pose and part of a Sun Salutation Series or Surya Namaskara in Sanskrit. It is a sequence of 12 poses or asanas that is traditionally done in the morning, facing the rising sun, explains author, Krishan Kumar Suman, in the 2006 book.

This pose is deceptively easy. You begin by standing tall with a straight spine.  Your big toes should touch. But if you find it difficult, you can keep your feet apart slightly.

Keep your arms at your side with your palms facing outward. Hold the pose for at least 30 seconds, working your way up to a full minute.

The mountain pose will improve your posture and balance while strengthening the muscles in your lower body.

Pro Tips: How to Wear Red Lipstick

Valentine’s Day is around the corner, and two colors are on our mind – pink and red. Pink is our favorite lipstick color when we want to create an effortless, natural makeup look. But, red is the shade we choose when we want to stand out and feel confident. You may think a red lip is only for movie stars and women who drink everything out of straws. But we’re here to show you how easy it is to create a red pout that works with your style. Keep reading for simple tips from our Global Makeup Educators on how to wear red lipstick.

Beginner’s Guide: How to Wear Red Lipstick

If you rarely wear red lipstick, here are a few pointers from Global Makeup Educators Edgar Dominguez and Hannah Hatcher. With these four steps, you’ll have a soft, kiss-friendly pout all night.

Exfoliate First – “Red lipstick looks best on smooth, hydrated, plumped lips,” says Edgar. He recommends exfoliating and hydrating your lips with our Sugar & Butter Lip Exfoliator & Plumper before you even pick out your lipstick shade.

Define Your Lips – Use a lip liner that is a similar color to your lipstick (try Crimson Lip Pencil). This will give your lips natural definition. Hannah Suggests lining and filling in your lips with the same shade to help create a kiss-proof finish.

Use a Lip Brush – For the most precise look, Edgar recommends using our Retractable Lip Brush to apply the lipstick. The brush will make it easier to color inside your lip pencil line.

Set It, and Go! – For a matte stay-put pucker, Hannah likes to finish her red lipped look with a little Amazing Matte Loose Finish Powder. You can use your finger to gently dab it on over your lipstick.

Choosing the Right Red Lip for You

Red lip products come in many different shades and formulations. From the classic red lipstick à la Marilyn Monroe to a more natural red lip tint, we have you covered. Here are our favorite red lip products to use for a natural, classic or long-lasting look.

how to wear red lipstick, red lip products

Natural Reds

  • “My favorite red shade that is youthful and flattering on all skin tones is Forever Red Just Kissed Lip and Cheek Stain,’ says Edgar. “It has the perfect balance of coral and red, leaving you with a smooth personalized signature red that stays.”
  • Want to add a little shimmer to your candy apple lip? Product Trainer Christine Orcutt Savolis suggests topping your favorite lip product with Crabapple or Red Current PureGloss Lip Gloss.

The Classic Red

  • If you are looking for the classic red lipstick, Hannah’s pick is Cindy PureMoist Lipstick.

Long-lasting Reds

  • To ensure your lip color lasts through your romantic dinner, Global Makeup Educator Shawn Towne recommends using Lip Fixation. He says, “apply the stain from Passion Lip Fixation to your lips, then top it with Forever Pink Just Kissed Lip and Cheek Stain. The color it creates is really rich and beautiful.”
  • Christine’s secret to a matte red is Hot PlayOn Lip Crayon. She also likes to layer it with Forever Red Just Kissed Lip and Cheek Stain for added staying power. “I always say when you want a red lip, you want it to last, ” she says. “Forever Red really stays and is easy to touch up later in the day.”

Pumpkin Spice Makeup Is Fall Personified

Each year, the long-awaited arrival of the pumpkin spice latte heralds the unofficial beginning of fall. (What, you thought that honor went to Labor Day?) But pumpkin spice mania doesn’t just stop at Starbucks. Everything seems to be pumpkin spice-ified this time of year, from a myriad of (sometimes questionable) food products to skin care products that harness the benefits of pumpkin to even pumpkin spice hair color. And, of course, we can’t forget about makeup.

Pumpkin spice is a flattering shade that works on a variety of skin tones and can be applied to cheeks, eyes and lips. Unlike bright orange, pumpkin spice has brown, cinnamon and sometimes copper undertones that make it far more wearable and perfect for fall.
